The Palmer/Pletsch School of Sewing offers a wide variety of learn to sew classes. You can browse through the entire schedule or click below to see the following type of classes:

LEARN to SEW

Beginning Adult Sewing Level I

Learn to sew or improve your skills in this four-week hands-on beginner class. Have fun learning basic sewing skills, as well as how to operate your sewing machine. Bring your machine to class (or borrow one from us). Maximum class size: 10 students. 4-week hands on class series.

Beginning Adult Sewing Level II & III

Improve your skills and build on what you learned in Level I. In this class students will add to their sewing sample notebook and sew a wrap-style robe (Level II) or two-piece pajamas (Level III). Completion of Level I or equivalent experience suggested. 5-week hands-on class series.

EZB (Elastic, Zippers, Buttonholes, etc.)

This three-week series is a hands-on class that will teach beginners basic techniques such as zipper installation, elastic applications, how to make buttonholes, apply ribbing, etc. Beginning Adult Sewing I or equivalent experience suggested. 3-week hands-on class series.

Sewing Machines 101

Do you need help learning to operate your sewing machine? This class is for you! Learn the basics about threading, winding a bobbin, machine settings, basic care, and what all those extra feet are for. This is a great class for those who have a “hand me down” machine or who have purchased from a store that offers no machine instruction. 1 week hands-on class.

Hems 101

Tired of paying someone else to shorten your clothes? Learn to do it yourself! This one session, hands-on class will teach you what you need to know to handle all those basic hemming jobs from jeans to skirts and pants. 1 week hands-on class.

Serger Level I

This is the perfect hands-on workshop for those who have just barely taken it out of the box, do not own one yet or perhaps just found one at a garage sale! Learn about easy threading, basic tension (it is O.K. to turn those dials), simple flat-lock and the versatile roll hem. Marta will guide you. You will be provided with fabric for samples which will go into a notebook with directions. If you need to borrow one of our sergers please let us know when you register. Maximum class size: 5 students.

Serger Level II

Do you have a SERGER and only use it to finish seams??? This class will really put you IN CHARGE of your serger!! Learn how to turn corners, sew curves and understand rolled edges. You can really use the silly thing!! It is not just a DOOR STOP!! This is a class for you to sew on your serger. Marta Alto is the talent in the Palmer/Pletsch serger Videos and DVDs, she has been teaching this workshop for 20 years all over the US and Australia, so register now for this hands-on workshop. Bring your serger, 3 colors of thread, some scraps if you have special fabric problems, and lunch.

Simply Open Sewing

A bi-monthly sewing session for those with unfinished objects hiding in the closet!Instructor provides a bit of help for those that need assistance finishing a sewing project. Hem a skirt, repair a buttonhole, shorten some curtains, or finish that pattern that you never seemed to have time to complete. Get reacquainted with your sewing machine or borrow one of ours. Take advantage of the sewing schools’ large cutting tables, big ironing boards and large work space. Hoodies with a Statement

Students will complete a hooded sweatshirt in this three week hands-on class. Topics for discussion include hood construction (to line or not to line) sleeve installation, ribbing vs self-ribbed, zipper installation and pockets (kangaroo, side-seam or patch, oh my). Special attention will be paid to neck seam cover-up. Modifying pattern to suit individual taste required for graduation. Prerequisite: Basic sewing skills required.

INTERMEDIATE SEWING

Fit For Real People

Do you love to sew but have problems with the fit of your garments? Learn to FIT YOURSELF; Learn your correct pattern size with only one measurement. Learn from the co-author of Fit For Real People. You will be able to alter 3 patterns of your choice after the first class when Marta shows you how you differ from the standard pattern (and we all do!!!). Take this 4-week class that is the same as our popular 4-day workshop at a fraction of the cost!!

Fit & Sew – Trousers

Custom fit a trouser pant to flatter your natural build guided by an expert. Explore techniques for fly zippers; slash pockets and a fitted waistband. Receive a list of suggested patterns, fabric and supplies upon registration. Two nights and all day Saturday class.

LEARN TO QUILT

Learn to Quilt Level I

Come learn to choose your fabric, cut, sew and finish a TRIP Around the World Quilt in this 6-week class. You will complete a lap size quilt. Includes pattern. Hands-on. Maximum 8 students.

Learn to Quilt Level III

In Level III you will make a sampler wallhanging that will show you how to piece 4 different blocks using Quilt in a Day’s book It’s “El”ementary Quilting. Learning triangles, squaring up and many more techniques to improve your quilting skills. Hands-on.

Open Quilting

This is an on-going weekly class that offers you help with any quilting project that you need to finish or have wanted to finish. Bring your questions to Julie about that quilt you are not sure of what to do next. Use the classrooms big ironing boards, cutting tables and lots of work space for sewing or laying out your quilt. Just think of what you can get finished. All those kits you have bought, projects you started in a class and didn’t get done. Lil’ Twister Table Topper or Runner

This fun table toppper or runner can be made with a charm pack or 5″ squares. It is amazing to see your rows of squares sewn together then turn into rows of continuous pinwheels with the help of a special ruler. This will make a great gift for the upcoming holiday season.

*NEW!* Golden Album Quilt – 20 Patchwork Block Sampler by Jinny Beyer

Come join us for this new Block of the Month. Some of the techniques you will learn will be curved piecing, perfect compass points along with just some basic piecing. This new sampler will help you on your journey to becoming that expert quilter. We will meet on the third Monday or Saturday of each month starting in October. We will spend the next 9 months working on this project together.

CREATIVE SEWING

Beginning Brazilian Embroidery

This is a three hour 3 week class. The students will learn using the Simply Irresistible Kit by DK Designs, a Roseburg, Oregon company. It includes multiple flowers using basic Brazilian embroidery stitches. The kit includes a pretty floral design on cream trigger cloth, the thread needed, an appropriate needle threader, a variety of needles and a needle grabber. Stitches covered will be stem stitch, couching, French Knots, several types of leaves and 5 different flowers. This would involve the least expense for those who don’t know if they will like this hand stitching art. A sample is on display at the store. Hands-on.

YOUTH SEWING

Kids Beginning Sewing

Under Lynda’s teaching your child will learn to wind the bobbin, thread the machine, operate the machine safely plus at the same time have a fun experience. Each student will make a pillowcase as they are learning and then move on to more projects as they acquire new skills.
